Protect Yourself From Molds
Following any water damage be more vigilant!
1. Description - About Molds
Molds, also called fungi or mushrooms, are simple microscopic
organisms that exist everywhere, inside as well outside any buildings.
They vary in quantity with the seasons and the area. They are
found on wood, dried plants, food, paper and many other organic
materials.
Molds are necessary in the decomposition of dead materials. Small
and extremely light, the spores formed by mold travel in the air.
The growths of molds can often be visible in the form of discolourings
on walls, bathtubs, windows etc with colors of orange and green
to brown and black. The most dangerous one are those you cannot
see. It is normal to have some mold. It is something else to be
careful about when people suffer from symptoms that affect their
health in one place and then feel much better away from that source
of contamination.
2. How Do Molds Grow?
To grow, molds have 3 essential needs :
| • |
Food, cellulose such as wood, paper,
leaves or dust. |
| • |
A source of water or moisture. |
| • |
A place to growth, cool & humid. |
3. Can There Be a Mold Problem at Your House ?
Yes, if there has been some water damage and that
the repair work was not carried out thoroughly, so that all
the wet parts were dried out perfectly and in-depth.
4. What Can Cause Mold Problems ?
| • |
Did you have a small flood ? |
| • |
Did your water drain back up ? |
| • |
Did your roof leak ? |
| • |
Did you have the water damage under the roof
repaired ? |
| • |
Is your humidifier too active ? |
| • |
Is your basement or under-ground too humid
? |
| • |
Did you have a plumbing leak ? |
| • |
Does the watering of your interior plants generate
too much moisture ? |
| • |
Does the fan above your stove correctly evacuate
the cooking steams ? |
| • |
Is the steam from the bath and the shower well
evacuated ? |
| • |
Do you hang wet linen to dry inside ? |
| • |
Does your clothes dryer ventilate to the outside
? (to be supervised particularly in the very cold areas) |
| • |
Is there condensation on your walls because
of a bad insulation or defective ventilation? |
5. What to do if the Symptoms Persist?
If the disorders of health persist after you consulted your
doctor and other specialists in health, there can be problems
connected to the quality of the air of your house. The damage
is sometimes visible, but invisible moulds are more threatening.
You can easily clean using domestic up-keeping products on all
surfaces you see. You probably did it many times already.
When there is recurrence of these visible mushrooms, it is often
the effect of the iceberg: you see only one small part of the
hidden monster.
